ECP ‘poised’ to ensure transparency in electoral system: CEC

ISLAMABAD, Dec 7 (FD):  The Election Commission of Pakistan is taking steps to “ensure transparency” in the electoral system, Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja said on Wednesday.

Speaking at a ceremony in the federal capital, he said the state institutions had significant role in the steps alraedy taken by the ECP, adding all such elements involved in violations of the code of conduct during the elections were taken to task.

He said the provincial governments weren’t ready to hold the local bodies elections. “In my opinion the local government polls are the most important one. The ECP made improvements in the monitoring system during polls and that the best-ever monitoring system will be introduced in the next elections.”

The CEC informed the participants that the electoral watchdog required sufficient time for new electroal delimitations, saying he supported the use of technology that should be voters friendly and privacy specific.

He challenged the critics of electronic voting machine (EVM) and oversees voting and asked them to prove any “opposition” by the ECP of the two.

Raja lauded the media’s role in supporting the actions taken by the electoral watchdog.
