ISLAMABAD, Nov 29 (FD): General Asim Munir took over as the new chief of army staff (COAS) at a ceremony held at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi on Tuesday.
Outgoing army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa pass the baton to General Syed Asim Munir as his six-year-long tenure of military leadership comes to an end.
Chiefs of all armed forces and senior civil and military officers are participating in the occasion.
Additionally, federal ministers, diplomats, dignitaries and journalists have also been invited to the ceremony.
Prior to the ceremony, General Bajwa and General Munir laid a wreath at the Yadgar-e-Shuhada.
General Munir, the most senior ranking general after General Bajwa, was appointed as the new army chief by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on November 24 after much speculation.
General Munir is the 17th army chief to assume the command of the Pakistan Army since the country’s independence.
The newly appointed military chief has served at the country’s two most influential intelligence agencies, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and the Military Intelligence (MI).
