Air pollution can affect your eyes: Here’s how to protect them

Air pollution has evidently affected our health in so many ways. As it causes several illnesses and diseases, it has been proven to be harmful to our eyes. Not just outdoor pollution that mostly comes from vehicle exhaust and stubble burning, indoor pollution and other environmental factors can cause various eye diseases like conjunctivitis, glaucoma, cataracts, and age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

According to Dr Neeraj Shah, Chief Medical Officer, Cataract, Cornea & Refractive Services, Sankara Eye Hospital, Jaipur, as a heavy layer of smog hovers over the city, one has to make sure to take care of their eyes now more than ever.

“The extreme pollution that we are now facing, particularly smog, is very harmful and affects our eyes in several ways. Dry eyes, conjunctivitis and eye allergy-characterized by itching, redness, discharge, eyelid swelling, and blurring of vision are some of the health effects on eyes due to pollution,” said Dr Shah.

He added that long-term exposure to air pollution results in eroding of eye health and vision in general. “Therefore, following preventive methods and taking care of your eyes is very important, particularly this winter season,” said Dr Sha

HOW TO TAKE CARE OF EYES?

Dr Shah listed some simple yet important ways people can take care of their eyes.

  • Remember to avoid exposure to the harmful pollutants present in the air. Use protective glasses or shades to cover your eyes while stepping outdoors.
  • Maintain basic hygiene by washing your hands regularly.
  • Try to avoid touching your eyes very often.
  • Do not rub your eyes as it causes dryness and lowers vision.
  • If you have any symptoms of eye infection like redness, itchiness, burning sensation, swelling and blurry vision, then immediately consult an ophthalmologist.
  • Avoid self-medication/ over-the-counter medication as these may lead to further complications.The cornea is the most sensitive structure in the eye and this can be affected by environmental agents. As the eyes defend against harmful materials only by a thin layer of the precorneal tear film, they are more susceptible to various diseases.

    Harmful air pollutants like carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide and particulate matter cause irritation and inflammation.
