ISLAMABAD, Nov 02 (INP-WealthPK): Vice Chancellor of University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmed Khan said that some 30,000 students of his university are educating farmers in different districts of Punjab about the latest production techniques.

The UAF has started work on high-quality varieties of wheat in order to mitigate the effects of climate change, he said while addressing farmers on a nine-day wheat campaign. The event was organised by several agriculture universities and the Agriculture Extension Department of Punjab.

He said agriculture is of key importance to the economy and self-sufficiency in this sector can only be achieved by adopting modern production methods.

UAF Spokesman and Professor of Entomology Dr Jalal Arif said the main purpose of the wheat drive is to inform the farming community about the new trends for increasing their per-acre productivity.

Dean of Faculty of Agriculture at UAF Prof Dr Muhammad Sarwar Khan said that farmers must be helped in adopting contemporary techniques to make the campaign more beneficial. He added that the campaign would also help the agriculture students get first-hand knowledge of the field and the problems faced by farmers.

The UAF, he said, is committed to promoting the country’s agriculture sector.

Director of Agri Extension Dr Shahid Hussain said the Extension Department is determined to provide agricultural recommendations to farmers in 22,000 villages in Punjab.

Chairman of Agronomy Dr Abdul Khaliq said that his department is making sure that the wheat target is achieved.
