Kidney health: Foods that are said to be good for kidneys

ISLAMABAD, July 12(ABC): Kidney diseases occur when kidneys lose the ability to filter waste from the blood. The number of Indians who suffer from chronic kidney ailments has doubled in the past decade; about 8 to 10% of the adult population suffers from some or the other form of kidney diseases. Advancements in medical research have made it possible to slow down and even halt the progression of such chronic diseases. Diabetes and high blood pressure are the most common risk factors for kidney disease. However, obesity, smoking, genetics, gender and age can also increase the risk. It is therefore necessary for people with kidney disease to follow a special diet and a healthy lifestyle.

Here are the superfoods which should be added in the diet of kidney patients:

Cabbage belongs to the cruciferous vegetable family. It is loaded with vitamins, minerals and powerful plant compounds. Vitamin K, Vitamin C and many B Vitamins are found in cabbage. Cabbage contains insoluble fibre that keeps the digestive system healthy thereby promoting regular bowel movements and adding bulk to stool. Cabbage is low in potassium, phosphorus and sodium which is healthy for a patient suffering from kidney problems.

Vegetable that is a good source of many nutrients, it includes Vitamin C, Vitamin K and B Vitamin folate. Cauliflower helps your body to flush toxins. Steam and mash cauliflower for a kidney friendly alternative to mashed potatoes. This vegetable can be consumed in raw form, steamed or can be used in preparing soups. One Cup of cooked cauliflower contains 19 mg sodium, 176 mg potassium and 40 mg phosphorus.

People with kidney problems are advised to use less amount of sodium in their diet including added salt. Garlic is a good source of manganese, vitamin C and vitamin B6. It is a tastier alternative to salt, it adds flavour to dishes and is quite nutritive. 9 grams of garlic contains 1.5 mg sodium, 36 mg potassium and 14 mg phosphorus.

This sweet fruit contains vitamin C and antioxidants called flavonoids that help to reduce inflammation. They contain ample amounts of nutrition and are kidney-friendly. 75 grams contains 1.5 mg sodium, 144 mg potassium and 15 mg phosphorus. Eat grapes as a snack, add them to fruit or chicken salad or drink grape juice.

Egg whites provide a high quality, kidney-friendly source of protein. They are a good choice for people undergoing dialysis treatment, who require a good amount of proteins but limited phosphorous. 66 grams of egg whites contain 110 mg sodium, 108 mg potassium and 10 mg phosphorus. Use egg whites for omelette or sandwiches. Hard boil eggs and use the whites to use in tuna or green salads.
