SL’s Mathews tests positive for COVID-19, ruled out of Galle test

GALLE, July 1 (ABC): Sri Lanka’s veteran all rounder Angelo Mathews has tested positive for COVID-19, and was ruled out of ongoing test match against Australia, which eventually won by the Ausies by 10 wickets, it emerged Friday.

According to media reports, the former Sri Lanka captain was tested positive for the infection on second day of the first test between the two countries.

Cricket website revealed Oshada Fernando had replaced Mathews in the ongoing test match. “Angelo Mathews tested positive for Covid-19,” a Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) statement said Friday.

“He was found to be positive during a Rapid Antigen test conducted on the player yesterday. The test was done, as the player was feeling unwell. Accordingly, he has been isolated from the rest of the team members and is following Covid-19 protocols,” the statement added.

Later on third day, Nathan Lyon and Travis Head were the stars with the ball as Australia bundled out Sri Lanka for 113 in the second innings and then David Warner and Usman Khawaja scored 5 runs to help Australia gain a 1-0 lead in the 2-match series.

Australia needed just five runs to win in the first Test against Sri Lanka after they bundled out the hosts for 113 in the second innings. For Australia, Travis Head and Nathan Lyon returned with four wickets each.
